This year hasn't been a marathon. It hasn't been a sprint.
It's been a MARATHON AND a SPRINT! Oh, and remember, sometimes it's been a frantic, "chased by a cheetah" kind of feeling! But, it's time to take a breather. I implore you to relax, recharge and rest over spring break. Take some time for YOU! You have given so much during this school year and you are worth taking care of too! So, take a breather. Disconnect. It's okay to not work on school this coming week!

My friend Kate Miller always teaches me SO much! In fact, she is the one who taught me the term, "LOVE IS AN INTERVENTION"! Well, in the days leading up to this week I found myself using another one of my favorite "Kate quotes". This quote helped me keep my anxiety about going ALL IN in check. As I found myself thinking about all that could go wrong or things that I may have forgotten to plan for, I began to remind myself to "stop dress rehearsing tragedy"!
Isn't that a great reminder? How many times have you been worried or anxious about something and then after it actually happens you realize that it wasn't bad at all? Think about how much mental energy you waste worrying about things you can't control. I mean of course a good plan is always important but after we have thought it through, we need to be okay with not thinking about it anymore until it happens! The anxiety and anticipation that led up to this week was INTENSE! But, we did it! Some things worked and some things didn't but WE DID IT! And we are fixing the things that aren't working! What tragedies are you dress rehearsing? What can you let go? You've come so far. Remember that when Monday comes. Remind parents, remind students and remind yourself. The things you've done are amazing.
From: The Boy, The Mole, The Fox And The Horse by Charlie Mackesy "Let's be honest.
It's been a rough year. We're coming up on 365 of living in a (and through a) pandemic. When times are tough it's easy for our self-talk to turn negative. It's easy for us to make excuses about why it's okay to BLAME, COMPLAIN and DEFEND (BCD). It's easy for us to get caught in a "doom loop". Tim Kight defines the "doom loop" as having "a negative attitude about improving your attitude". Let that sink in for a minute.... Okay so how do we know if we are trapped in a "doom loop"? Here's what Tim says about that: A negative attitude is the result of negative thinking. It is a lack of mental discipline. It focuses on the problem and stops looking for solutions or opportunities. A negative attitude can only survive on a steady diet of negative thinking and negative self-talk. A negative attitude is habit-forming, and it has an impact on you and the people around you. A negative attitude affects you physically. A person with a negative attitude will almost always lose to a person with a positive attitude. Sadly, many people with a negative attitude are stuck in a doom loop because they have a negative attitude about improving their attitude. This is not a good place to be! The bottom line here is that WE CONTROL OUR ATTITUDE. So, if we keep telling ourselves that going "all in" is going to be terrible, then it will. If we take that stance that we are excited about going "all in" because this is the moment we have been waiting for for an entire year then, it's going to be GREAT. We control our self-talk, we control our attitudes. If you'd like to know more about what Tim Kight says about THE POWER OF ATTITUDE, click here. It's easy to get stuck in a "doom loop". It's easier to be negative than positive. We must build skill at keeping ourselves in a positive frame of mind. Check out Tim Kight's "Simple Disciplines For Improving Your Attitude": |
